IUD OMG
Holy cow. Newmommy got back from the doctor's today, and dropped quite a bomb. Because she plans on breastfeeding for the next 10-12 months, and after that will need to go on pills for her PCOS, she had decided to get an IUD instead of taking the "mini-pill" for now and upgrading to the full-fledged version when Newbaby is weaned. What we didn't expect was that it would be almost $1200 to get the thing put in. Seriously, doctors need to have price lists in their offices. This is the second time something like this has happened. Back in October, Newmommy had some routine bloodwork done and we ended up having to pay over $2300. Equally annoying is the fact that a family of 3 can make no more than $538/month and have no more than $3000 in liquid assets if they want to qualify for medicaid. Considering paying for similar insurance ourselves would cost nearly $800/month, I don't know what the government was thinking when they set those income limits. I couldn't barely pay our rent with 538/month, let alone feed and clothe my wife and child.
Bloody healthcare.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your health insurance coverage situation? Did you check into Planned Parenthood?
Geez. I agree with Nurse Jenna, planned parenthood works with a sliding pay scale.
@NurseJenna - @TornadoChaser - I haven't had insurance for almost a year at this point, Newmommy had pregnant women's medicaid which ran out a week ago, so currently we are self pay on all medical procedures. We're aware of Planned Parenthood's pay scales, but neither of us is morally comfortable with benefiting from an organization that provides a large majority of all abortions and receives much of its funding from those procedures. I'm trying to find a job that offers medical benefits, but nothing seems to be turning up at the moment.
@newdaddy - You ultimately will have to make the decision you are comfortable with (as you already know and have clearly thought about). I would just maybe suggest that there is another way to view Planned Parenthood. I know everyone has very differing (and usually strong) views on abortion, be it one way or the other. But perhaps you could look at it like this--PP provides a lot of services that help different people with different needs who all have different points of view on the matter. They actually get a lot of 'business,' if you will, from people who just go there for their routine gyn care and contraceptives. People need different care at different points in their life and have to make decisions that are most appropriate for them. I'm not trying to be preachy, I would just hate for newmommy to go without something she needs. I don't like our healthcare system and I think people need to try and find and use what resources are available (since there aren't a lot).
Another possibility for you, if you are able to get a physician to acknowledge it is medically necessary for her condition (that other options are not viable methods), you can contact the company that makes the IUD and often the companies have forgiveness programs when you show you are unable to afford something your doctor deems necessary. Just a thought.
@NurseJenna - do you have links for information on these forgiveness programs? I'm not really an expert in such things. I'd heard about them, but no one seems to be able to find pamphlets or links or something.
@newdaddy - What type of IUD does she need? Can you also explain why she needs an IUD again (as opposed to mini-pills?). The info for the programs would be from the company that makes the IUD.
@NurseJenna - it's a mirena( sp?). The mini-pill wouldn't have been much of an issue, although the doctor said it was less effective. Bigger problem was that she needed something to regulate her( Which I guess the mini wouldn't do) since she has PCOS, and can't be on fortamet while breastfeeding. I'm not honestly sure on the specifics, I just know that the doctor told her if she wasn't planning on getting pregnant again for another couple years, this IUD was her best option.
Mirena is made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. I do not see a specific patient forgiveness program. However they do have a patient payment option for those whose insurance does not cover it (or uninsured patients) where it is 50.77 for 12 months. The number to call is 1-866-647-3646
